Service Note - Firmware upgrade for safety laser scanners

Service Note - Firmware upgrade for safety laser scanners

Description

During operation, and especially when docking and undocking from a charging station, MiR250, MiR500, MiR600, MiR1000, and MiR1350 sometimes report the following error: “Safety System Error (Laser (Front/Rear) Device Error”.  In SICK Safety Designer, the error code is “0xE20B001F”, which could be followed by "0xE20B000D" or "0xE20B000E".

The error is not a safety issue, so there is no recall from SICK or from MiR. It is a loss of function that does not compromise safety in any way. When reporting the error, the robot goes into Protective stop as intended.

The error causes the robot to stop operating and requiring a restart. After a restart, the robot may function again for long periods of time without reporting the error.

The error code indicates an EMC issue in the safety laser scanner. This issue has been resolved by SICK by updating the device firmware to:

  • microScan3: FW1.82 (used on MiR500, MiR600, MiR1000, and MiR1350)
  • nanoScan3: FW 1.93 (used on MiR250)

Unfortunately, these firmware updates cannot be installed through MiR software and require direct access to the scanner by a SICK service technician.

The firmware has already been updated on scanners starting from these serial numbers:

  • microScan with S/N 2345xxxx or newer. All scanners in production are updated per October 1, 2023
  • nanoScan with S/N 2417xxxx or newer. All scanners in production are updated per June 6, 2024

For robots within warranty, MiR will provide a replacement scanner for any affected scanner upon documented proof of failure. This proof must be in the form of a SICK report showing the error within the warranty period of the robot (active standard or extended warranty)—see the guide How to generate a SICK report. All documentation must be provided via a support ticket for MiR Technical Support—see the guide How to create a technical support ticket. You can find these guides on MiR Support Portal. Installation and labor are not covered.

For robots without warranty, we recommend contacting a local SICK support line and requesting a visit by their service technicians to upgrade the scanner. If SICK is unable to upgrade the firmware, it is possible that the scanner must be replaced at your expense by a new scanner from MiR that is pre-sorted for precision. Scanners that are not pre-sorted by MiR may not function correctly, will void the personnel detection safety rating of the robot, and will not be covered by any warranty from MiR.

If SICK can send a service technician to upgrade the scanner, the upgrade takes approximately 15 min per robot. The upgrade entails a small risk of the scanner failing and shutting down permanently. MiR is not liable for these failures.

You will need to prepare your robots before the service technicians from SICK can upgrade the robot. They need to have access to the USB port on the scanners—see the guide How to prepare MiR robots for SICK firmware upgrade. You can find this guide on MiR Support Portal.

This service note has no expiry date and will remain active for robots within warranty.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and we thank you in advance for your cooperation and
support.
